With Wendy

Hey everyone. So today is Wendy’s birthday, and I was hoping to give her a day off from work by attempting to write a blog post for her. I believe Wendy is a very talented and gifted writer. Unfortunately, I am not nearly half the writer Wendy is, so please forgive me if this post isn’t quite up to par.

I love Wendy very much. If you were to ask me to write down what I love about her, then I might end up writing a trilogy of novels for you. That’s probably too much for a blog entry, so I was hoping to share a glimpse of one of the chapters today.

Chapter 12: The Joy of Receiving Packages

Sitting and waiting for us at the front door is a small cardboard box. As we go to pick it up, she asks me who it’s for. Because I order a lot of things on Amazon.com, the vast majority of the boxes delivered are for me. So I usually receive a cute frowny face from her when I answer the question. But today, the box is addressed to her. She lights up.

As we head into the apartment, she makes a b-line for the scissors and sits down to open the box. Watching Wendy open a package reminds me of how I used to open Christmas presents when I was younger. She’s filled with excitement and eager anticipation.

Once the box is opened though, things get a bit more serious. She pulls out a shirt-dress and starts to examine it. Now, if I were that shirt-dress at that particular moment, I’d probably be sweating bullets. You see, this is the crucial “make-it or get-returned” moment for the shirt-dress and Wendy is not the least bit shy about returning something if it doesn’t work out. Almost everything she orders has gone through an extensive research and deliberation phase and now the piece auditions live for the first time. She carefully scans the shirt dress, feeling the fabric, looking at the stitching and craftsmanship.

She holds the shirt dress to me with a big smile on her face and says, “Doesn’t it look just like the picture?” I swear I hear a sigh of relief from the shirt-dress, but it’s not over yet.  Wendy  disappears into her closet. A few moments later, she’s come out and round two of the audition begins as she starts testing out different pairing options. We now also come to my favorite part. She turns to me and asks, “So what do you think?”

I’ll be honest here. Comparing my fashion sense to Wendy’s fashion sense is like comparing a grain of sand to the entire beach or like a drop of water to the entire ocean. But when she asks for my opinion, I can see in her eyes that she really trusts the answer I’m about to give. Quite frankly, and I don’t think I’ve ever said this to her, I’m always extremely flattered. I’m flattered because I believe at the root of every great artist, is great taste. And I believe that Wendy’s taste in fashion is through the charts. So for her to earnestly ask me for my opinion, means that from one artist to another, she believes I have great taste.  In film terms, it would be like if Scorsese or Spielberg handed me a script they wrote and said, “So what do you think?”

I always give her an honest answer. Most of the time, I think she’s made an excellent choice, but there are some times I don’t like the piece and once in awhile, have to veto what she’s picked out. In this particular instance, there’s no need to veto. I put my hand to my chin, carefully look over the ensemble and respond with, “I really like that cut, it fits you very well, especially the shoulders. I didn’t think it would work coming out of the box, but it looks great.”

She smiles and then heads back to the closet to create another pairing.

I’ve been watching Wendy perform this ritual since the day that we started dating and every time she comes into the room and asks for my input it’s the highlight of my day.  I love how she takes such incredible care of everything in her closet and treats each piece as a unique and beautiful piece of art. It’s the same energy and dedication I see her pour into our blog entries, photos and films.  I feel very blessed to be able to work alongside someone who is so dedicated and talented in her pursuit of art.

None of this could’ve have happened, of course, if Wendy wasn’t born. So if you have a chance today, please join me in wishing her a happy birthday.

This has been an amazing journey for us, and we are forever grateful to all the kind words and support that you have given us. Your comments and stories really warm our hearts and motivate us to push our art further to share with you. Thank you.

And to Wendy:

Happy Birthday baby!!!! :)

Thank you so much for reading!
